Pizza Rolls not Gender Roles

12:50

As a society, the promotion of gender norms are rampant. Whether they are found in media, television, film, or as a culture, the cissex community enforce their ideals onto the multi-gendered world. It is a pressing issue that as a society, we have struggled in compromising. There are more than two genders. The spectrum of which Western society has viewed the LGBQT+ community is vastly limited, when there are those who still are unaware of the concept that there are not only two genders. The stereotypes derived from these two genders present another crucial issue with society, wherein we continue to abide by gender stereotypes.

Gender is not simply male or female. It is also not defined by body parts, chromosomes, or sexual orientation. Gender is a spectrum, with wide variations. Most importantly of all, gender is how one expresses themselves and how one relates to themselves. It is a personal identity defined and constructed by themselves, not society or social construct.

With regards to the commercial, and many likewise advertisements that promise masculinity or femininity, they categorize men and women under categories that subscribe to social gender norms. Considering that in the year 2015, it is still not a global understanding that the likes, dislikes, influences, actions, and behaviorism of people have no correlation to a person's gender is unacceptable. Simply because there are people of the world that do not abide by heterosexual gender stereotypes, does not grant those who agree with these stereotypes to oppress them. They deserve inclusion and the equal dignity and respect as any other person deserves. When society imposes gender norms onto people, it is a form of oppression. In the commercial, the men in the photographs are suspects of gender stereotyping. It is clear that the men in both pictures is the same man. However, in the photo of him in front of the truck, he is subject to the stereotypical masculine descriptions. With a single photograph, the people in the different study groups described the man with the truck as more handsome, manly, and rugged than the man with the car, as though the vehicle one drives has any correlation to their personality.

This commercial identifies the gender exclusivity still present in society.  As a society, both men and women are victims of gender stereotypes.  Our preferences are not signals of one's masculinity or femininity. We should all be free to admit to our passions without feeling insecure of our gender. Live passionately with your preferences, and submit not to the pressures of gender norms that tell you otherwise. We cannot allow the stereotypes of our gender to define us, otherwise we become part of the problem.

Everyone in society has the right to live the life of their choosing. Men do not have to concede to the masculinity of their gender. They do not have to enjoy sports, drinking, trucks, or nature to be classified as a male. However if they do, that's great too! Likewise, women are not required to wear dresses, bake, or follow other stereotypical gender norms. If they do, that's completely acceptable too! What matters most is what you identify yourself as being. Your gender/genders (or lack thereof) is not a limitation of your preferences or actions. From the moment of birth, we are subject to gender roles. Be aware of the stereotypes imposed onto each gender, and make a stand. Accept the lives others choose to follow, and help one another understand the issue with gender roles. Lead the life you choose, do not stand for gender roles, and respect gender pronouns!

  1. In my opinion, the ad really had no positive message to provide viewers with, and if its intentions were to be humorous, I think there are better ways to portray that. I feel as though to me, there was no message really at all. I was just watching people state their-unwelcomed and unappreciated-opinions. I didn't like it at all and hated the vibes and the message I got from it, which was that masculinity is determined by a material item that both genders use.
